Safety goes above all else and for that we have PPE This goes especially for our eyes, which are irreplaceable. We must therefore be extra careful with our eyes and protect them against external influences at all times. It is therefore mandatory for some professions to wear safety glasses, for example for welders or laboratory technicians. These glasses must also meet a number of requirements. Curious about the requirements of safety glasses? Then read on!
Different types of glasses
There are different types of safety glasses for all kinds of professions and these are an integral part of regular work clothing. Firstly you have standard safety goggles, which protect against dust and grinding splashes. But there are also welding goggles that protect against sparks and fit-over glasses that you can wear over regular prescription glasses for protection. Finally, there are goggles, which protect against splashes of chemicals and gases. These glasses are usually worn by laboratory technicians.
Standard requirements for safety glasses
Safety glasses offer further protection against various factors, such as sun or impact resistance. That is why there are standard requirements that every safety goggle must at least meet. For example, they must be resistant to aging, resist UV radiation, the frame must be fire resistant, the glass must show optical purity and the viewing area must have certain dimensions.
Basic standard EN 166
The lenses of safety glasses must undergo various tests to meet the EN 166 standard. Firstly, the safety glasses must be sufficiently optically neutral so that the glasses cannot cause dizziness or headaches during work. This limit is determined by measuring three types of deviations: spherical, astigmatic and prismatic effect. Secondly, the glasses are also tested for impact resistance. The safety glasses are tested for falling and shooting at low and high speed. If the glasses meet the basic standard EN 166, this will be marked on the glasses.
More specific safety standards
In addition to the basic standard EN 166, there are several safety standards for glasses, namely EN 169, EN 170 and EN 171. These are adhered to for specific safety requirements. At Unishore Workwear we have different types of safety glasses that are suitable for different professions.
