About Helly Hansen

Helly Hansen was founded in 1877 by Norwegian captain Helly Juell Hansen. At that time, he had been sailing the Norwegian seas for over twenty years – since he was a teenager – and was not satisfied with the products that were available to protect sailors against the harsh weather conditions in that region. To improve this, Hansen set out to create his own. By waterproofing cotton with linseed oil, he created a fabric that was not only water-repellent, but also very comfortable and flexible. The raincoats and rain trousers that Hansen designed were an instant success and after his products received much praise at the World Exhibition in Paris a year later, Helly Hansen’s protective clothing also became an international concept.

In the years that followed, Helly Hansen continued to innovate. Even after the founder died in 1914 and his son took over the company, the products continued to develop. During this time, the company made a number of revolutionary developments, especially in the field of materials. In particular, the design of the Helox fabric – in which PVC was woven through the cotton – was a great success in the late 1940s. Not much later, Helly Hansen developed the fabric that the company called Fiberpile; the forerunner of what is known today as fleece. Helly Hansen also became a popular brand outside of the maritime world with this; Swedish lumberjacks were very impressed by the insulating effect of this layered material, which kept them warm even in the rain. In the decades that followed, the company came up with more extremely useful inventions, such as the dry LIFA® and the breathable Helly Tech®.
