What requirements must wide view goggles meet?
Wide view goggles are designed to shield the eyes from all mechanical hazards and liquid and dust particles. To do this the wide view goggles must have a good fit on the face to provide the right protection. Therefore, the glasses must comply with EN 166 and have the numbers 3, 4, and/or 5 on the frame marking. These numbers provide protection against:
- 3. Droplets (goggles) or projections (face shields) of liquids.
- 4. Coarse projection particles > 5 microns.
- 5. Gas and small dust particles < 5 microns
This note is only on the frame marking of the goggles. Most wide view goggles have lenses made of polycarbonate with an anti-scratch and anti-fog coating. For comfort and a good fit, frames are made of polypropylene or thermo plastic rubber.
Polycarbonate or Acetate
Wide view goggles and safety glasses are available with lenses in polycarbonate and acetate versions. The most common lenses are made of polycarbonate. These are particularly impact-resistant and lightweight. They are almost always provided with a scratch-resistant layer. They are less suitable for working with aggressive chemicals, but do provide suitable protection against molten metals and hot liquid particles. Cellulose acetate lenses are inherently more scratch resistant and are especially suitable for working with chemicals.
