Werkhandschoenen: wanneer gebruik je die?

Work gloves: when do you use them?

Work gloves may not always be pleasant to wear but they are essential for health. They protect against injury from tools or chemicals. But when do you use which gloves? And what requirements do they have to meet?

Work gloves are important

People who work with tools and chemicals must protect themselves from injury. Tools can cause cuts or abrasions, and chemicals can cause burns.

The regular cotton or leather work gloves do not provide sufficient protection. They are especially suitable for ordinary jobs in and around the house. Which gloves are suitable for more serious jobs depends on the dangers lurking: mechanical or chemical.

Work gloves against mechanical hazards

Working with dangerous tools is called mechanical hazard. There are solid gloves on the market for this purpose, each tailored to cut, abrasion, tear and puncture resistance. The choice of a work glove then depends on the tools you are working with. For example, for sawing it's best to buy gloves with extra cut resistance. These gloves mainly protects against cuts.

Work gloves against chemical hazards

In addition to the previously mentioned mechanical hazard gloves  there are also gloves that provide protection against chemicals. For example, working with chlorine requires a work glove that does not allow the chemical to pass through such as latex or rubber disposable gloves Cotton gloves are then insufficient for this.

Work gloves and standards

In any case gloves must meet the general requirements as described in the NEN-EN 420 standard. This standard mainly concerns aspects such as shelf life, sizing and instructions for use.

There are also specific requirements. The manufacturer of the gloves therefore states the protective value on the packaging with a number from zero to five. This value is broken down by type of protection (cut, abrasion, tear and puncture resistance). The greater the risk of injury, the higher the protective value should be.
