What should you keep in mind when buying a construction helmet?

A construction helmet must provide protection and comply with European standard EN 397 for construction helmets. There are also other things you should pay attention to. The most important of these are the on-site requirements. In many places, any standardized helmet is allowed, but in some places wearing a helmet with a short or completely round brim is not permitted. If in doubt: always ask the person in charge on location whether the helmet is suitable.

Another important thing to pay attention to is comfort and ease of use. There are helmets with various suspension systems and size settings. A comfortable and easy-to-use construction helmet with twist adjustment is put on and taken off faster compared to an uncomfortable one. Also note that it is sometimes useful to have a chin strap, these are often available as a 2-point or 4-point chin strap. You must always pay close attention that the chin strap and other helmet accessories fit the helmet.

How is a construction helmet constructed?

A construction helmet consists of 2 basic parts, the suspension system and the shell. You usually buy a construction helmet including the suspension system. The suspension system is clicked or clamped into the shell. The shell provides protection against penetration and, together with the suspension system, absorbs the impact of a falling object.

The shell can consist of various materials. Usually this is ABS, but other materials such as Polyethylene (PE) provide similar protection against falling objects. While an ABS shell offers all-round protection, a different type of helmet shell may be necessary when there is a risk of contact with chemicals.

Different types of construction helmets

A construction helmet must meet various requirements before it can be used as a construction helmet. These are laid down in EN 397:2012. This standard determines what impact the helmet must be able to withstand, how penetration resistant it must be and how well it can withstand fire. In addition, there are optional tests for extreme temperatures or electricity. Good requirements are important for helmets and for many people it is desirable that they are available in different models and colors.

• An American construction helmet is a construction helmet with a full brim, these helmets are sometimes called pith helmets. There are not many models available on the European market because the United States has different requirements than the European Union. A suitable model is the Portwest pith helmet.
• Construction helmets are available in various colors. Consider the common yellow construction helmet, white construction helmet, and blue construction helmet. Nowadays black construction helmets are available as well, so there is a match for every company style and logo

Prints or stickers on a construction helmet
