EN ISO 11611: Protective clothing for use in welding and related processes

The EN ISO 11611 standard specifies the requirements for welder's clothing. This concerns clothing that can be worn for a whole day (8 hours) at normal temperatures and offers protection against small splashes of molten metal, accidental flame contact and UV radiation. The standard does not deal with protective clothing worn during special welding work.


 

EN ISO 11611 has two different classes EN 11611 Protection of welding and related processes

This standard consists of a number of tests. The most important tests are described in the ISO 6942, ISO 9150, ISO 15025 and EN 1149-2 standards. The EN ISO 11611 standard has two classes:

  • Class 1 (lowest level): less dangerous welding situations
  • Class 2 (higher level): more dangerous welding situations

In addition, for adequate general protection against risks to which welders may be exposed personal protective equipment worn that are covered by other standards. This is to protect the head, face, hands and feet.

What requirements are placed on work clothing with this standard?

To be certified with the EN ISO 11611 standard, work clothing must meet the following requirements:

  • Work clothes that complies with this standard must always meet the conditions set in the ISO 13688 standard.
  • Bags on the outside must have a flap that is 10 mm wider on both sides than the bag. With an exception for pockets on the leg, which are placed behind the side seam and have an opening of 75 mm or less (meter pockets).
  • Vertical pockets below the hips with an angle of 10 degrees or less do not need to have a flap either.
  • Push-throughs should always be fitted with a flap or Velcro, even when placed vertically.
  • Metal closures must be covered on the inside or outside.
  • Pleats and the like should be avoided.
  • Neck openings must be closed.
  • The maximum distance between buttons is 15 cm.
