EN ISO 11612: Protection against heat and flame (global standard for EN531)

The EN ISO 11612 standard specifies the performance requirements for protective clothing EN 11612 Heat and flame protection which must protect the user's body (with the exception of the hands) against heat and/or flames. The performance requirements set out in EN ISO 11612 apply to protective clothing that can be worn for a variety of purposes, for example where clothing with limited flame spread is required and where the user may be exposed to radiant, convective or contact heat or splashes of molten metal. The standard does not apply to firefighters (EN 469) and welders (EN ISO 11611). The requirements include: performance after pre-treatment of the fabric, accessories, mechanical properties, dimensional stability etc.

Test results

The standard contains a number of tests regarding the cloth. The results of these tests are represented by the letters A, B, C, D, E and F. If a letter is not mentioned or the class is '0', the lowest value has not been achieved or the test has not been carried out; the clothing then offers no protection against this property.

A: A1 or A2 (surface or edge ignition)

Were tested based on the index 3 test of the EN ISO 15025 standard

B: Convection heat ISO 915

Performance level Transfer Convective Heat Index (HTI24)
Min Max
B1 4.0 s < 10 s
B2 10.0 s < 20 s
B3 20.0 s

D1 100g < 200g
D2 200g <350g
D3 350g

E: Splashes of molten iron ISO 9185
